Altaf Dadasaheb Shaikh

Filmmaker, Screenwriter & Lyricist
       Indian filmmaker, screenwriter, and lyricist

Altaf Dadasaheb Shaikh (born 10 February 1983) is an Indian filmmaker associated with Hindi and Marathi cinema, working as a director, writer, screenwriter, lyricist, and actor. Widely regarded for his socially rooted storytelling and strong narrative vision, he has made notable contributions as a director, writer, dialogue creator, and lyricist. His most prominent work, the National Award-winning Marathi film Veda B. F. (2019), established him as a significant voice in contemporary regional cinema.

Early Life and Background

Altaf Dadasaheb Shaikh was born in Nandeshwar village, Solapur district, Maharashtra, India. During his formative years, he was raised in Mumbai and Pune, two cities that played a major role in shaping his artistic sensibilities. Growing up in culturally diverse environments exposed him to literature, folk traditions, and cinematic narratives from an early age. His inclination toward writing, storytelling, and cultural expression became evident during his youth and gradually evolved into a professional pursuit within the film industry.

Career

Shaikh made his entry into filmmaking with a clear focus on meaningful narratives and social relevance. His debut Marathi feature film, Veda B. F. (2019), marked a decisive turning point in his career. The film, which promoted communal harmony and Hindu–Muslim unity, received both critical acclaim and commercial success. Remarkably, Veda B. F. earned over ₹11.5 crore within 21 days, making it one of the fastest-growing Marathi films of its time.

For Veda B. F., Shaikh undertook multiple creative responsibilities, including story development, screenplay, dialogue writing, lyrics, and direction, a pattern that would later define his filmmaking style. The film went on to win the National Award for Best Feature Film in Marathi, firmly establishing his reputation as a serious and impactful filmmaker.

Over the years, Altaf Dadasaheb Shaikh continued to expand his creative footprint through various projects such as Come On Vishnu, Dharavi Katta, Betuka, and Breakdown. Each of these works reflected his commitment to strong storytelling, layered characters, and socially conscious themes.

Karmayogi Abasaheb and Box Office Success

One of the most significant milestones in Shaikh’s career came with the release of Karmayogi Abasaheb on 25 October 2024. The film is a biographical portrayal of Ganpatrao Deshmukh (Abasaheb)—a freedom fighter, Shetkari Kamgar Party leader, and an 11-time Member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly.

Despite facing competition from large-scale commercial releases such as Singham Again and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, Karmayogi Abasaheb emerged as a major box-office success, collecting approximately ₹25.49 crore within five weeks. The film struck a deep emotional chord with audiences across Maharashtra, largely due to its authentic storytelling, impactful dialogues, and grounded performances.

Actor Aniket Vishwasrao’s portrayal of Abasaheb received widespread praise, while Avadhoot Gupte’s music added emotional depth to the narrative. The film’s success extended beyond cinema halls, influencing public discourse and political awareness. Notably, Babasaheb Deshmukh, the grandson of Ganpatrao Deshmukh, won the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections, a development often cited as reflective of the film’s cultural and social resonance.

International Recognition and Records

Karmayogi Abasaheb achieved remarkable global recognition, earning accolades at several international film festivals. The film won awards at the Sweden Film Award 2024, Tamizgam Film Festival, Golden Lion International Film Festival 2024, and Navy International Film Festival. It was also officially selected and pre-screened at esteemed international platforms such as the Amsterdam Lift-Off Film Festival and the Crownwood International Film Festival, where it was praised for its emotional depth and narrative strength.

The film was produced by Mayakka Mauli Film Production and Mumbai Creation Enterprises under the guidance of Balasaheb Mahadev Erande and Maruti Tulshiram Bankar, with Reliance Entertainment managing its international distribution.

Style, Records, and Public Image

Altaf Dadasaheb Shaikh is known for seamlessly blending realism with cinematic appeal. His earlier film Veda B. F. featured the qawwali “Hey Maze Durvesh Baba”, sung by Altaf Raja, which gained widespread popularity and led to multiple world record recognitions. One of the most talked-about moments in Shaikh’s career was when he humbly accepted a world record certificate directly from a postal delivery worker, an incident that was widely appreciated as a reflection of his grounded personality and simplicity.
